ABS SV0157

ABS SV0157 is a high-performance styrenic terpolymer that is part of the ABS grades offering improved toughness compared to High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) grades. It is characterized by its low shrinkage, good dimensional stability, and high melt strength, making it highly suitable for producing extruded sheets and large, thick shaped items.

Key Features

  • High Melt Strength: Facilitates the production of extruded sheets and large, dimensionally stable shaped items.
  • Low Shrinkage: Ensures minimal dimensional changes during cooling, critical for maintaining the precision of molded parts.
  • Good Dimensional Stability: Maintains the integrity of product dimensions throughout its use, enhancing functional reliability and aesthetic consistency.

Applications

  • Large Appliance Panels: Ideal for parts requiring high impact resistance and dimensional stability.
  • Thermoformed Items: Suitable for producing complex shapes like hot tubs, recreational vehicle parts, and refrigerator liners, where high durability and aesthetic appeal are crucial.

Processing Guidelines

  • Drying: Recommended drying in a desiccant dehumidifying hopper dryer with an inlet air dew point of 20°F (-29°C) or lower to achieve a moisture content of 0.1%. Typical drying conditions are 2 hours at 180°-190°F (82°-88°C), or 4 hours at 160°-170°F (71°-77°C).

Typical Properties

  • Melt Flow Index (200°C/5kg): 0.5 g/10 min (ASTM D-1238), indicating the flow characteristics of the polymer during processing.
  • Izod Impact Strength (Notched): 31 KJ/m² at 23°C (ASTM D-256), demonstrating excellent toughness.
  • Vicat Softening Point: 101°C under a 50N load (ASTM D-1525), the temperature at which the polymer begins to soften.
  • Bulk Density: 600 kg/m³, important for handling and storage.
  • Tensile Strength at Yield: 430 kgf/cm² (ASTM D-638), showcasing the material's strength under tension.
  • Tensile Strength at Break: 420 kgf/cm² (ASTM D-638), indicating how much stress the material can withstand before breaking.
  • Elongation at Yield: 4% (ASTM D-638), measuring the deformation before yielding.
  • Elongation at Break: 80% (ASTM D-638), indicating high flexibility.
  • Flexural Strength at Yield: 500 kgf/cm² (ASTM D-790), reflecting the material’s resistance to bending.
  • Flexural Modulus: 18,500 kgf/cm² (ASTM D-790), demonstrating the stiffness of the material.
  • Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT): 82°C at 0.45 MPa (ASTM D-648), showing the temperature at which the material deforms under load.
  • Rockwell Hardness: 104 R Scale (ASTM D-785), measuring the hardness of the material.

Conclusion

ABS SV0157 is engineered for applications that demand high-performance material properties, such as improved toughness and heat resistance. Its suitability for extrusion and thermoforming, combined with its robust mechanical properties, makes it an ideal choice for manufacturers looking for a reliable material for complex and large-scale applications.
