Arya Sasol Polymer Company, established in 2000, is a significant player in the petrochemical industry, located in the Pars Special Economic Energy Zone, Assaluyeh, Iran. This joint venture, formed in collaboration with Iran's NPC and South Africa's Sasol, focuses on producing polymers with a capacity of over 1.1 million tons of ethylene annually.

 Historical Insight

The formation of Arya Sasol Polymer Company stemmed from the privatization initiative under Iran's Third Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2000-2005). The company was set up following a Memorandum of Understanding in 2002 between NPC and Sasol. This strategic partnership aimed to establish a leading position in the Middle East's polymer production sector. The company officially commenced operations as an independent entity, separating from Pars Petrochemical Co., and focusing on the production of various grades of polyethylene.

1. Ethylene:

  • Production Capacity: 1,100,000 tons/year

  • Applications: Ethylene is a critical building block in the petrochemical industry, used as a precursor to produce various derivatives including polyethylene, ethylene oxide, and ethylene dichloride. These derivatives are utilized in the manufacture of plastics, detergents, solvents, and are integral to the production of consumer goods, automotive components, and textiles.

2. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE):

  • Production Capacity: 375,000 tons/year

  • Grades and Specifications: Arya Sasol produces 9 different grades of LDPE, each tailored for specific applications such as clarity, strength, or flexibility.

  • Main Applications:

    • Packaging Films: LDPE is used to make thin, flexible films for food packaging, shrink wraps, and stretch films due to its moisture resistance and flexibility.

    • Bags: Used in manufacturing both retail and industrial bags which require durability and flexibility.

    • Other Uses: Agricultural films, coatings, and injection molding products.

  • Licensing: Production technology licensed by Estami Carbon Company, Netherlands.

3. Medium/High-Density Polyethylene (MD/HDPE):

  • Production Capacity: 375,000 tons/year

  • Grades and Specifications: Arya Sasol offers 10 different grades of MD/HDPE which vary in density, offering a range of stiffness, toughness, and chemical resistance.
